Few things are more endearing, aggravating or amusing than the sleeping habits of cats. One of the most baffling and admirable qualities about cats is their ability to create a comfy bed no matter what chaos surrounds them. Christmas presents, moving boxes and couch crevices are just a few of the places you might find a cat dozing smugly, oblivious to bulldozers outside or crinkly tissue paper rustling every time they move.
My cat Ferdinand sleeps in the swankest of all cat beds now: the Dolce Vita DuoTemp bed. Naturally, being named Ferdinand, my cat firmly believes he is the king of the world and has had no problems adjusting to his new regal digs.Ferdinand is in his silver-fox years now so I have to think more about pet health and pampering than when he was a frisky little kitten. Thus a Dolce Vita DuoTemp is where he makes his current furry home.
Truthfully, I feel like his nice new Dolce Vita pet bed is reparations for the pet bed boot camp he went through when he was young. As a kitten Ferdinand would literally sleep anywhere. Read on for a few more illustrious examples....
When I was little, I lived in Hawaii and all the beaches were made of lava rock. We had a patch of beach outside my childhood house, and Ferdinand would snore the day away snuggled into the lava rock crevices, as content as if he was swaddled in sheep bunting or something. He is the only creature I have ever seen who could be comfortable sleeping on black, craggy rocks. I think most people would view that as a punishment reserved for prisoners, but Ferdinand acted like the most pampered cat in all of Kona.
Once I hit pre-adolescence, it was the era of the America Girl doll. My mom's a Martha Stewart type so she made a dress and a doll bed for my American Girl Doll Felicity. The little white painted wood bed looked adorable with my doll perched up against the headboard, until one day a new white lump appeared at the foot of the bed. Ferdinand apparently saw the doll bed as the perfect cat size, and quickly claimed it as his new personal pet bed. It wasn't long before poor Felicity was sleeping on the floor and Ferdinand was sprawled out like royalty on the little patchwork quilt.
Of course, like all cats, Ferdinand's favorite pet bed of all was directly on my face. Night after night, I'd fall for his faux-cuddly tricks as he'd nuzzle under my neck across my chest. Slowly but surely though, he'd start inching his way up until his furry hulk was snuggled right into my breathing orifices, at which point he'd start snoring happily. I, however, couldn't snore because I couldn't even breathe with all the fluff in my nose and mouth, so I'd have to slide him back down and the nightly tug-of-war would begin. Because I am a total push-over when it comes to my cat, that era of my life will now be known as Evenings Without Oxygen.
Luckily, that period finally ended with the DolceVita DuoTemp bed, the only pet bed my cat would ever find preferable to rocks, doll beds and his owner's face. High praise indeed!
